Silverspot Cinema to Open at University Mall in Chapel Hill

UNC students have had to endure the lack of a modern movie theatre for several years. The closest multiplex theater to campus is at Southpoint. There is a movie theater on MLK but it is old and run down. That will all change during the 2015 school year. Sometime in the next few months a Silverspot Cinema will open at University Mall. This is the newest movie theater concept with reserved seating, a luxury restaurant and two cup holders – one for a drink and one for a cup of wine.

This will be considered a luxury experience for most college students and recent graduates. It is interesting to see a company spend $12 million on a movie theater at University Mall. Over the last several years a large number of investors have come into Orange County and Chatham County with the hopes of getting in early on the growth. Chatham Park will revolutionize Pittsboro, North Carolina and Briar Chapel is bringing many business professionals to the area.

When you combine that with the strong Durham, NC housing market you have a recipe for plenty of economic growth. Downtown Durham has changed greatly in the last decade as millennials are looking for lofts or townhomes in the area. Durham, Chapel Hill and Pittsboro are growing like crazy as many former UNC graduates that come back to the area are in shock of the changes.

Before heading over to the new Silverspot Cinema at University Mall you may want to swing by the brand new Smoothie King on Franklin Street that will be replacing Campus Calzones. We expect plenty of other changes around the UNC campus in the next few months as well. Nothing has replaced GameStop under Top of the Hill so it will be interesting to see if any business takes over that lease.

Further down Franklin Street there is major construction in front of Granville Towers. We are not sure what this is going to be but it is a major change of scenery. As soon as we find out what is going to replace the small office park we will let you know.

We have also heard rumors of a new car wash coming to Chapel Hill. Unfortunately, most students drive to a Raleigh car wash to get their car cleaned. This can be a 30 to 45 minute drive. There are other car washes close by but they tend to be extremely busy or just not that good. The UNC area definitely needs a new full service car wash close by.
